The dates were carved in antiquity
Babylonian astronomers split the sun’s yearly path into twelve equal signs some
2,500 years ago, and Greek astronomers fixed the calendar dates we still print today.
Back then the bookkeeping matched the sky: on the March equinox, the sun stood at the
edge of Aries.
II
Earth wobbles like a slowing top
The sun’s and moon’s gravity tug on Earth’s equatorial bulge, so our axis slowly
swings in a circle - one lap every ~25,800 years. Seen from Earth, the entire
backdrop of stars drifts about 1° every 72 years against the calendar.

Two millennia later, it’s a full sign off
That drift now adds up to roughly 28° - nearly one whole sign. Measured against
the official constellation boundaries (drawn by the International Astronomical Union
in 1928), most birthdays land one constellation earlier - and from Nov 29 to
Dec 17 the sun crosses Ophiuchus, a thirteenth constellation the zodiac never
counted.
